Fishing Made Easy: Using Downriggers  by Franchis Adam
One of the many vastly used devices while fishing is a downrigger where the lure is placed at the desired depth. A downrigger is a three to six-foot long pole in the flat direction supporting a big weight (a metal sphere) using a cable of stainless steel. A clip, also known as a “release” attaches a fishing line to the cannonball weight is connected to a fishing line using a clip to which a bait is attached. Downriggers have made fishing quite easy and increased the throughput significantly.
Downriggers have four important parts- the wire, load, rod, and the general reel. The clip connects the fishing line with the wire. The load which is normally a small mass of a metal is joined with the stainless steel wire. The reel is connected to this whole setup and is wound either manually using a crank or automatically using an electricity-driven motor.
The lead, which is nothing but the length of the wire between downrigger clip and the lure, is variable and generally depends on how deep into the ocean or away from the coast, the fisherman wishes to go. It varies anywhere between a few feet to hundreds of feet. For example, in areas where salmon is the main catch; this lead is quite high than the usual average so that the catch does not get scared away by the noises produced by the boat’s motor. Though this is a necessity, but this causes several problems in small fishing regions when these high lead downriggers result in tangled lines which are difficult to remove and handle. After the catch is caught, the pace with which the lure is pulled back severely impacts fishing. Accurate speed tracking is thus required. Generally, 1 to 5 knots trolling speeds are recommended for boats with downriggers. The specifics vary depending on which species of fish is to be caught.
