How to Choose the Correct Fishing Line to Suit Your Needs.

There are basically two types of fishing line to choose i.e mono-filament and braided fishing line:

Mono-filament fishing line consists of a single strand of fiber e.g. nylon. The material is melted and extruded through small holes of varying sizes and cooled to produce different diameters of line. The strength of the line depends on the diameter of the line and also the material used and the manufacturing process, so don’t always think that the thicker the line the stronger it is always look at the pound test rating of the line which is usually printed on the line packaging. They also come in different colors which may work for different applications.

Mono-filament lines are strong, readily available and relatively low cost but they do have their weaknesses as they absorb water which can cause a decrease in sensitivity and loosen knots when in contact with the water for long periods, they also degrade with time which is accelerated when exposed to sunlight and heat. So remember to store the line correctly and replace them regularly.

Braided fishing lines compose of braided fibers of usually Dacron, Spectra or micro-dyneema. They have high knot strength, lack of stretch, and great overall power in relation to its diameter. Their smaller diameter to strength ratio allows an angler to wind on more line to his reel when compared to mono line; this is useful when handling big fish. They also resist abrasion pretty well. They can be visible to the fish as they are opaque in water; therefore it is advisable to use a leader of different material such as mono or fluorocarbon. The cost of braid is also much higher than mono filament lines although their degradation is very little when compared to mono. One has to also check if their tackle can handle braid as it is very strong and its small diameter can damage reel spools and rod rings.
